I'm starting to post a number of the pictures I took at Death Valley over the weekend. I shot with both my Sigma DP1 and my Olympus E-3. With the E-3 I shot pretty much exclusively with the Zuiko Digital 50-200mm SWD. Nice lens, but certain Sigma users were concerned with the E-3's "nagging imager problems." ;-)

And Let's Not Forget the DP2!

It's great to see the beginnings of coverage around the forthcoming Sigma DP2.  Of what I know about the DP1 and the sample images Sigma posted from the DP2, I have high hopes.  My DP1 served me in spades over the weekend in Death Valley with the Sigma Users' Group.  We had a great time and I'll be posting pictures from the trip soon.

Now we resume waiting, patiently, still with our fingers crossed and our eyes on the prize, hoping not too many more shows go past before this interesting camera actually appears.

Ohayocon 2009

Today I went downtown Columbus with Brian & Karl to attend Ohayocon 2009. I posted a few of the shots I took today on Flickr. The link on this image should take you there. I'll post more as I get things together, but I've been very picky with this shoot as it was an exercise of some new techniques and equipment combinations.

I broke out the Stroboframe flash bracket on this one, and I'm happy with the results. As the flash is right over the lens and pretty high up, shadows stay below the subject and not off to odd angles as often happens with on-camera flash.

A larger gallery of the pictures from the day are up on my MobileMe Gallery here.

Seth's Blog: 10,000 hours

by scott — last modified Dec 29, 2008 10:27 AM
Seth's blog is a must read for me. Just so many interesting insights and pearls that I make it a point to read each item carefully. Here's his take on Gladwell's Outlier's premise of "superstardom."

Seth's Blog: 10,000 hours: "You win when you become the best in the world, however 'best' and 'world' are defined by your market. In many mature markets, it takes 10,000 hours of preparation to win because most people give up after 5,000 hours. That's the only magic thing about 10k... it's a hard number to reach, so most people bail."

A New Day, A New Skin

by scott — last modified Dec 19, 2008 08:38 PM
Here goes a new look for my blog. This coincides with an upgrade of the version of Plone I'm using for this site. The upgrade was pretty straight-forward and went pretty smoothly (save some issues with ownership and user login). I think I'm getting a better understanding of this stuff the more I use it (duh!).

TWIP » TWIP Podcast #51 - More Q&A

by scott — last modified Oct 16, 2008 07:09 PM

Another very interesting episode of This Week in Photography. it's always good to hear what's going on in the world of hotography even if the time I can allocate to photography wanes.

Right now I'm in sort of a lull with my camera gear, but the fall colors season is biting at my heels. I may head down to Hocking Hills this weekend. Reports are that Hocking county is in peak color.

Some really great words to live by around losing a job. It's really great to see Steve working through these issues and being open about his experience. Very inspiring.

We had a great weekend in Chicago. Took an architectural tour, had fun on the rides on Navy Pier and visited friends there. Chicago is a really great city. Much better than Manhattan, I think.

Microsoft's Mojave Project

by scott — last modified Jul 30, 2008 10:07 AM
Such a great summation of everything that's wrong with Microsoft's attempt at selling Vista to XP users.

Call Me Fishmeal.: “The Mojave Experiment:” Bad Science, Bad Marketing
The Pepsi Challenge Effect: “The Pepsi Challenge” was a blind taste test that Pepsi overwhelmingly won (again, from Blink). Yet, most people still drink Coke. Why? Gladwell’s thesis is that a single sip of a soft drink is very different from drinking a whole can, which is the smallest unit most people imbibe. Pepsi usually wins the challenge because it's a sweeter drink, and initially people respond to this extra sweetness. But after drinking a can, Pepsi becomes cloying.

A Local Starbucks Dies...

by scott — last modified Jul 19, 2008 01:39 PM
A sad day. Just found out that the Starbucks I frequent (well, not all that frequently...) is now under the "600 store closure" knife. That's sorta okay, tho, because there's a Kroger's market in the same mall that sell Starbucks coffee. Oh well. Onward!

Sounds like a Dave Winer ploy to me. A play to get even more buzz... Like me blogging about it here.

iPhone Japan

by scott — last modified Jul 13, 2008 02:08 PM
Pretty surprising that the iPhone is selling so large in Japan. Sure, Japan is full of Apple fan(atic)s, but considering how many amazing phones and speeds they have there, I would have thought the iPhone would be old-hat. Guess not.

Again this year we went to the OCLC July 4th event and again we enjoyed the Dublin city fireworks display. it was as impressive a show as it was last year. This year, however, I brought the SD14 with me to try my hand at shooting fireworks. A bit tricky, but many of the online guides really helped. Manual focus at infinity, f5.6 in manual exposure mode with the shutter in Bulb setting.

I think they turned out pretty well. What do you think?

Dave Winer: The mea culpas didn't come - Politics on The Huffington Post

by scott — last modified Apr 28, 2008 08:25 AM
I have the Wright interview queued up to watch. I may even just play the audio on my way to work today.

Dave Winer: The mea culpas didn't come - Politics on The Huffington Post: "At best the MSM got the Wright story wrong, at best it was a mistake. But if it were a mistake, there would have been some mea culpas today, after seeing the Wright interview, someone would have said they got it wrong, maybe even apologized for contributing to the vilification of Rev Wright. GTDInbox Updated

by scott — last modified Apr 23, 2008 11:17 AM
This is nice. the GTD tool for Gmail is now updated to work with the latest Gmail tweaks. This broke for me about one week into using this, and I've been hobbling along without it for a long time (or what seemed to be). Good to see that they updated it. Now off to donate! :)

Clinton presses case after big Pennsylvania win

by scott — last modified Apr 23, 2008 10:52 AM
Is the conversation really about who can beat whom in an election, or is it who can bring the most to the table next year? Obviously Hillary fixates her message on the former, when it's really the later that matters.

Plus, how is this win big? Double-digit lead, sure, but that equates to only 10 more delegates than she had before. Still not enough to win the party's nomination.

Clinton presses case after big Pennsylvania win - USATODAY.com
"I won that double-digit victory that everybody on TV said I had to win, and the voters of Pennsylvania clearly made their views known -- that they think I would be the best president and the better candidate to go against Senator McCain," Clinton said Wednesday morning in a CNN interview.

This is really great. I use Spanning Sync to synchronize my Mac's calendar with Google Calendar. Soon I'll be able to sync my contact list. This is about as huge for me as I use Google apps every day, multiple times a day for work and personal settings. And it'll be free. Dang!

SplashData News: iPhone SDK released

It's really great to see the guys over at SplashData working to adapt to the iPhone / Mac, but unfortunately 1Password ate their lunch while they slept. Frankly, 1Password beats anything SplashID was able to do by a mile.
