Apple Announces iPhone 2.0 Software Beta

This is very cool stuff. I think it's great because I'm an iPhone user, but I also think it's great as it demonstrates how responsive companies innovate.

I guess we'll see how ActiveSync on the iPhone is received, but I have a feeling it will put Windows Mobile to shame. While I must say, I've never personally used a Windows Mobile device with Exchange, I have used Windows Mobile in the past. If the general usability of the iPhone is any indication, this functionality will rock. Blackberry users will drool.

Loading applications on a smartphone was always a PITA. You had to find them somewhere on the web, download them, install them on your desktop then before you could sync them to your phone. How odd is that? Why do you have to install a smartphone app on your desktop? It makes so much more sense to load them directly on to your phone.

The one gap Apple didn't address with this announcement is desktop sync. How do you sync information between desktop apps and iPhone apps? Perhaps there are APIs available that they didn't get to in the presentation. Perhaps I'll go in and pick up the SDK just to find out...
