IT May Be Dead This Time 'Round

I remember reading Byte magazine in the early '80s where pundits decried the impending doom of MIS (what they used to call IT).  The rise of personal computers, then, as now, user enablement was the rallying cry behind that prediction.  Unfortunately, even "personal" couldn't live up to their promises.  Even pre-Iternet, the much more personal computer wasn't enough.

Today we not only have user enabled desktops, but we have mobile devices and now services.  What else is there for IT to do down the road?  Is that a rotting carcase I smell?
